IY Forum’s Heritage Celebration

The community came out for a lot of fun and celebrations at Main Road soccer field this Heritage Day thanks to the IY Forum and a big variety of organizations and performance groups!

The morning opened with a performance by Amoyo Performing Arts Foundation and the kick-off of the Hout Bay United Football Community’s Rainbow Football Heritage Day Tournament with 60+ kids aged 5-12 taking part.

The Drum Majorettes from IKhaya le Themba paraded through Imizamo Yethu to the field led by parents in their stunning heritage day outfits. Performers and speakers on the day included poet Zameka Ngalwa, Mirriam Mdoda, Amoyo, Sbongiseni Mkiva, Silkamva Choir, Mr.Zakumba, Harvest Youth Project, Lunathi Mdatyulwa, and many more.

The IY Forum has been hosting an annual community event since it formed in 2011 including two years hosting World AIDS Day events, a Youth Day workshop and film screening, and now this year’s Heritage Day. In the past the organizations that form the IY Forum have collaborated to organize the events, this year a different approach was taken as IY Forum Facilitator and Lalela Project Field Manager Loyiso Skoti, mentored a group of IY youth leaders to plan the event themselves with support from the IY Forum members. The day was additionally made possible thanks to sandwich donations kindly passed on from James’ House’s usual Thursday delivery from Olivia, sandwiches and fruit donated by Helena Fagan of Harvest Youth Project, and a donation of water bottles from Khaya Mlandu of LoveLife.

Special thanks to Lalela Project intern Wandisile Maqoko and Lalela Project learner Melikhaya Mdubeki for taking photographs for us!
