Launching Local Micro Tourism Business Opportunities

The purpose of the programme is to support upcoming local tourism entrepreneurs to develop local visitor experiences in Hout Bay that can be promoted and sold.

The programme will award two enterprises a support package valued at R50,000 each.

The Hout Bay Partnership and Open Africa will support the winners with mentorship, marketing and networking to help kickstart the business. The programme is funded by the Hout Bay Partnership. The Hout Bay Partnership (HBP) aims to harness talent and goodwill to address Hout Bay’s social and economic challenges to contribute to a better, more inclusive and more integrated future for us all.

The winners will be supported by Open Africa. Open Africa opens entrepreneur’s eyes to the tourism opportunities in their area and builds their confidence and ability to grow their livelihoods. As the world’s largest job creator and one of the fastest growing sectors of the world economy, tourism is a great platform to help communities grow. Helping visitors find the local experiences they want, and helping entrepreneurs tap into their value.

Prospective participants will submit a brief application form and shortlisted candidates will then be asked to pitch their business ideas to a panel of experts. The programme takes the format of a challenge where participants will be required to make presentations and refine their ideas. Experts will provide feedback before two business concepts are selected for mentorship and marketing.

Criteria for participation:
• Concepts should take the form of a tourist experience such as a guided walk, food experience or cultural experience in Hout Bay.
• The offered experiences should have strong community linkages.
• No infrastructure projects will be supported.
• Participants should have some experience in tourism, although no formal qualification is required.
• Participants should permanently reside in Hout Bay and should be able to converse in English.
• Young people are encouraged to apply.

Prospective applicants are asked to attend a compulsory briefing session at the Hout Bay Partnership offices upstairs from the Bay Harbour Market, 31 Harbour Rd on Tuesday October 25th 18:00-19:00 to review the application and have any questions answered.

Please send completed applications by Tuesday November 1st, to or drop off at the office.
