Treppie arrives in Hout Bay!

MEDO and their partner Elcarbo work to support new business opportunities, entrepreneurs as well as existing businesses in selected communities that are not closely located to the existing Enterprise Development support network using the MEDO mobile learning center known as ‘Treppie’.

In November the MEDO team with the assistance of Hout Bay Partnership, utilized Treppie to assist community members to identify business opportunities, offer a variety of business development skills and provide information on existing enterprise development support and employment support initiatives in Hout Bay and Cape Town. By doing so, entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs are equipped with a basic understanding of how to formulate and present their ideas and are then able to access support beyond the Treppie tour to continue with developing their skills and start their ventures.

Treppie was based at the Hout Bay Library and the program consisted of four workshops on three different topics. The first two days were dedicated to Opportunity Identification workshops. Sources of ideas are varied, therefore the team encourages people to read, observe and keep up to date with what is happening in their respective communities in order to spot gaps in the market and services needed. The third day was dedicated to a one day Introduction to Business workshop. This workshop helps the participants decide what to sell and to who, where the market is, determine pricing as well as help them network by engaging with each other in order to build relationships with other entrepreneurs. The participant learned about the practical steps that they can take to starting a business and how to articulate their offering. The final is a day was the Pitch. This is where the participants were challenged to apply what they have learnt throughout the week and present their ideas. They had an opportunity to pitch and receive constructive feedback from the group.

MEDO is looking forward to returning to Hout Bay in early 2016 and expanding its impact into our community. Please contact the Hout Bay Partnership Project Coordinator, Ashley Newell, if you would like to be notified about MEDO’s 2016 Hout Bay programs.
